Every few years, something enters the market that doesn’t just change the conversation — it restructures the underlying assumptions of an entire industry. The rapid advancement of AI systems purpose-built for software and security workflows is one of those moments. And I think most of the market is still misreading what it actually means.
There will be no shortage of takes. Some will declare that AI has finally “solved” software security. Others will dismiss recent advances as incremental hype. Both miss the point entirely. What matters is the structural shift happening underneath the market — and what it demands from the organizations building, deploying, and governing software at scale.
The Real Signal: Software Is Being Created at Machine Speed
The most meaningful consequence of advanced AI in software development is not that any single model is smarter than its predecessor. It’s what these systems collectively enable at scale.
Software is now being created faster than at any prior point in history. Code generation is increasingly automated. Developers across every experience level can ship features, scripts, and services in a fraction of the time it once required. AI-assisted development is no longer a niche practice reserved for early adopters — it is rapidly becoming the default.
That acceleration is genuinely remarkable. It is also genuinely dangerous if organizations don’t reckon honestly with what moves with it.
More code being created automatically means more dependencies being introduced automatically. More AI-generated pull requests. More logic assembled by systems that don’t carry accountability for what they produce. More software entering production pipelines with less human review at each stage.
The question organizations haven’t fully answered yet is: How do you trust software that was substantially built by a machine?
The Misdiagnosed Threat
Here is where I think the prevailing narrative gets it wrong: the common fear/assumption is that AI will render security tools obsolete. That advanced models will simply scan and remediate code so efficiently that traditional application security becomes unnecessary.
That is not what’s happening.
AI doesn’t reduce the need for security. It creates an exponentially larger surface area that requires security to operate at the same machine scale as development itself.
When code was written entirely by humans, the volume of software entering an organization’s environment was naturally constrained by human bandwidth. AI removes that constraint. That means the volume of potentially vulnerable, policy-violating, or unverified software entering enterprise environments is poised to increase by an order of magnitude — not decrease.
The insight that keeps me focused: the bottleneck in software security was never the ability to find vulnerabilities. It was always the ability to fix them, govern how they enter in the first place, and prove to boards, regulators, and customers that the software you’re running is trustworthy. AI makes the finding portion faster for everyone — attackers included. Speed of finding was never the hard part. Speed of trust is.
The Market Is Moving Toward a New Category
The application security market has historically been framed around a simple value proposition: find vulnerabilities in code. That framing is becoming too narrow for what enterprises actually need.
The more important and durable market is forming around something harder to commoditize: software trust at scale. That means:
Provenance — knowing where code came from, whether human or machine-generated, and under what conditions.
Continuous verification — not point-in-time scans, but persistent, automated assurance that what’s running in production is what was approved.
Autonomous remediation — the ability to close vulnerabilities at the speed they’re introduced, without creating a backlog that developers route around.
Governance — enforceable policies around AI-assisted development, model usage, dependency introduction, and deployment gates.
Attestation — the ability to prove security posture to regulators, insurers, and customers with auditable evidence rather than assertions.
This is the control plane that modern software development needs. It’s not a scanning tool. It’s an intelligence and trust layer embedded throughout the software development lifecycle.
The Conversation Is Moving Up the Stack
One of the more significant shifts I’m watching is where these conversations are happening inside enterprises.
Twelve months ago, AI-generated code governance was largely a developer tooling discussion. Today, I’m having conversations about it with boards, CISOs, general counsel, and risk committees. Regulators are asking questions. Cyber insurers are updating underwriting criteria. Enterprise procurement teams are building AI governance requirements into vendor contracts.
This is no longer a conversation about which security tool to buy. It is a conversation about:
- Whether organizations can demonstrate that their software supply chain is trustworthy
- How boards can provide oversight of AI-assisted development practices
- What evidence organizations can produce when a regulator or customer asks, “How do you know this software is safe?”
Organizations that treat this as a developer tools problem will find themselves significantly underprepared. The companies that get ahead of this will be the ones that build governance and trust infrastructure now, before the volume of AI-generated code in their environments reaches a scale that makes retroactive controls impractical.
What Enterprises Should Be Asking
If you’re a CISO, a CTO, or an executive with accountability for software risk, the questions worth prioritizing right now are not primarily about which AI coding assistant to adopt. They are:
- What is our policy for AI-generated code entering production?
- How are we validating that AI-assisted development meets our security and compliance standards — automatically, not manually?
- Can we demonstrate the provenance and integrity of the software we’re shipping?
- What does our autonomous remediation capability look like at the scale of AI-generated output?
- How do we prove our security posture to regulators, insurers, and customers in an environment where software is created by machines?
These are the questions that will define enterprise software strategy over the next several years. And they are questions that need infrastructure answers, not just process answers.
Where the Market Is Heading: Software Trust
The companies that will define this next era of software security are not the ones that simply move faster at finding vulnerabilities. They are the ones that become the trust authority for AI-generated software — the layer of intelligence that helps enterprises answer, with confidence, whether the software they’re building and deploying is safe, compliant, and production-ready at machine scale.
That is a significantly larger and more strategically durable market than traditional application security alone. The repository is becoming the new security perimeter. The software development lifecycle is becoming increasingly autonomous. And the enterprises that thrive will be the ones who have a governance and trust layer that keeps pace with the speed of their development environments.
