5 Tips for Information Security with Sandy

Most information security tips deal with protecting your business and private data from malicious attacks but what should you do when the threat comes from Mother Nature herself in the form of an unpredictable Frankenstorm? The following 5 tips will help you prevent any loss of data and damage otherwise to your IT infrastructure.

  1. Back up, back up, back up - All your important data should already be backed up but if you’ve been holding out for the perfect opportunity to do so, an imminent hurricane is pretty ideal.
  2. Have Power Failsafes - If your business relies on certain hardware or devices running, investing in a power generator is probably a worthwhile idea. Also, in the hours leading up to the worst of the storm take the time to fully charge all your devices to ensure access and communication for as long as possible.
  3. Use Surge Protectors - Prioritize which equipment you need power for and plug those into your surge protectors (if you don’t have room for everything.) Though you should unplug any devices that don’t need to be on. In addition because of the large amount of rain expected and the potential for flooding, you should get all electrical cords and devices off the ground where they might be vulnerable to water damage.
  4. Give Employees Flexibility - Giving your employees the option of working remotely has two positive aspects, it gives them peace of mind to be able to monitor their homes and families which also probably equates to a more productive employee.
  5. Have a Plan - Not just having a plan but write it down and communicate it to your employees. Once everyone is on the same page and understands their roles don’t forget to test the plan!

Our list of tips is by no means a complete list of all things there are to consider in the face of a hurricane, we implore that you always place safety first. For more safety tips visit
