If you’ve been in the security industry for awhile, you may notice that there are a lot of events. As in, somewhere in the world, there is a security event happening just about every day of the year. You have your giant industry events, analyst events, regional events, hacker cons, and pretty much any kind of gathering you can possible think of – including conferences on boats, trains, and buses. At any given time, you can find a security conference happening *somewhere*. So, what is it about the security industry that loves an event?
In a search for the ultimate answer, I queried some of my event-attending colleagues. Chances are you have even seen one of these CA Veracoders at an event somewhere.
“Security conferences are a great way to reconnect with people you haven’t spoken with for a year and to meet new people who are entering the field and doing interesting work. They are also a great opportunity for partnerships and business development. The security industry is full of individual practitioners, small consultancies, and startups. When there is no marketing budget a key way to get known is to present at a conference or at least be present and network.”
Chris’ Up-coming Events:
DHS Software Assurance Forum - September 2012
Hack in the Box - October 8-12, 2012 http://www.hitb.org/
“Conferences are an essential reality check for security researchers. Presenting or discussing your work publicly serves as a constant reminder that you should be doing unique, interesting, and practical research. They are also a great opportunity for entry-level security folks, both on the business side and the technical side, to meet and learn about the state of the art and the security demands of the real world."
“The networking that happens at security conferences is particularly valuable. You never know who you’re going to meet who you’ll end up collaborating with down the road. The tangential conversations that take place in the hallway over coffee can be the most useful of all. At smaller conferences you have the opportunity to meet the up-and-coming talent in the industry, and hopefully recruit them to your company.”
Chris’ Upcoming Events
Nordic Security Conference - August 28-29, 2012 http://nsc.is/conference/nordic-security-conference-2012/
OWASP AppSec USA - October 25-26, 2012 http://www.appsecusa.org/
“The best part about security events is definitely the people. Hearing what interesting new ideas and concepts everyone is working on gives me motivation and energy for my own work. There are so many conferences in the security industry because there is so much to talk about. Information security is a very young discipline and new theories and models are being proven or disproven at an astonishing rate. As the pace of technology continues to increase, so must the pace of security research.”
Tyler’s Upcoming Events

“The opportunity to share or hear/see what's happening in the security industry and scene is a major boon; it helps with keeping a finger on the proverbial pulse. Also, I enjoy (re)connecting with colleagues, friends, business partners, and even, on occasion, idols at conferences, where oftentimes even *more* valuable discussions happen.”
Zach’s Upcoming Events
SOURCE Seattle - September 13-14, 2012 www.sourceconference.com
As for myself, I tend to think that our proclivity for events is a reflection of the community that is the security industry. Securing the world isn’t easy, but every year thousands of people venture out around the world to learn how. We network, share war stories, compare notes, learn about new services and offerings, meet with potential clients and build relationships. CA Veracode is proud to participate in these events and to have the opportunity to share our knowledge, products, and research with the security community. So next time you see CA Veracode at an event, come by and say hello!
