I hope that your feedback get's published by Popular Mechanics. Not only is it a well written response, but the content you provide is obviously from someone who knows this area and is actually grounded in reality.

Although I'm not a former member of the NSA's Red Team, I have some experience with the colors of networking. I have been parts of various Red Teams, Blue Teams, and Purple Teams (sort of the double-agent concept, to simulate covert insider threats) and have worn black, white and grey hats. (A googling of my name presents various biographic info.)

Based on my own past work experience and project involvements, I'm pretty sure that all of your comments are extremely accurate, and I completely agree with your factual corrections. Despite the author's intent on portraying members of this elite "Superhacker Squad" (did this article accidentally miss the editorial review process? Is the "Geek Squad" a subsidiary of the "Superhacker Squad"?) as being the digital equivalent of James Bond with genetically spliced DNA from Bruce Lee, it's not fooling anyone worth their weight in RAM. Unfortunately, this type of exaggerated sensationalism has probably just fueled the fantasies of a few thousand script-kiddies, who are now downloading Goolag and Wikto this very moment.

Lastly, I admire your ability to criticize (...maybe criticize is the wrong word....I'm experiencing a temporary vocabulary outage....I'm trying to convey your ability to present a realistic perspective) the efforts of our government or military in a tactful way, without the usual political cynacism that is irrelevant. Something I occasionally fail to do well (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/06/06/2142218).

Their goals are worthy, noble and a growing necessity. However, if I had to seek out the world's top hackers, my first place to look wouldn't be the DoD or NSA....I'd probably head over to the next scheduled Black Hat or DEFCON.

Well done,
Noah Schiffman (Security Phreak)
